The Laboratory Sciences Division provides analysis on ticks, sand flies, mosquitoes, and animal blood and tissue for over 25 major vector-borne and zoonotic diseases of world-wide public health concern from CONUS and OCONUS locations.  Our testing capabilities include detection of the causative agents of malaria, leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, sand fly fever, dengue fever, West Nile virus, tick-borne encephalitis virus, and other diseases of military relevance world-wide using real-time PCR and antibody-based analysis methods.

To enhance readiness, health, and wellness of Soldiers and military retirees, their families, and DA Civilian employees by providing state-of-the-art, timely, and accurate world-wide vector-borne disease detection services.

Our Services

Pathogen diagnostics:  We have the capability to test sand flies, ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas as well as animal blood and tissue for a wide range of disease-causing organisms.  Our capabilities include pathogen detection for the causative agents of malaria, leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, sand fly fever, dengue fever, West Nile virus, tick-borne encephalitis virus and other diseases of military relevance world-wide.

Pathogen analysis support:  We provide protocols, methodologies, and pathogen analysis to other DoD labs as needed to support the One Health USAPHC Mission goals of safe people, animals, and the environment.

Vector-borne and zoonotic disease surveillance planning:  We provide consultative services, guidance and supplies in the way of collection kits to support arthropod vector and animal reservoir surveillance.
