|Advanced Food Technology||[Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School and DoD Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory (FADL)]. To provide critical science based technical skills training to Veterinary Food Inspection Specialists to ensure uniform interpretations of policies and application of procedures when performing inspections of subsistence. Upon completion of the course, graduates will be more proficient in protecting the force from food borne illnesses and able to contribute fully to the theater and command operations.
Area of instruction includes food microbiology, chemistry, packaging technology, preservation, deterioration, and advanced sensory evaluation techniques. Students will experience the outcomes of different food spoilage organisms and abuses to food products both intentionally and naturally occurring and learn to differentiate between the two and why they occurred. |
|Installation Veterinary Services||(Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School) To introduce new command directives and concepts, which will reinforce required training identified by the Department of Defense Veterinary Service Activity (DODVSA) and Veterinary Service units worldwide. A wide variety of food safety, quality and defense inspection policies and directives are covered in addition to animal medicine polices and directives, which encompass the current needs of the Veterinary Service.
This course is built using three training modules each consisting of 38 academic hours; MACOM Food Inspection Mission, Food Defense Program, and Commercial Sanitation Audit Program. Instruction presented will be based on the specific training needs of the requesting unit. Only one module of the three will be presented during the designated 1-week iteration of training. |
|Medical Detachment (Veterinary Service) Predeployment Course RC (Reserve Component)||(Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School) This course focuses on the scope and duties of veterinary personnel in both a mature and immature theater, and is tailored specifically for the theater the unit is expected to enter. It may include, but is not limited to: OCONUS audits; operational rations inspection; food defense; food safety concerns specific to the theater; staff operations; logistics support; Military Working Dog (MWD) care; large and small animal medicine; and zoonotic, foreign or endemic animal diseases of concern in the theater.|
|Surveillance Food Laboratory Manager||[Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School and Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory (FADL)] This course encompasses the management of a surveillance food laboratory as required to support the unique military mission of the Veterinary Services Table of Equipment (TOE) units and the Table of Distribution and Allowances (TDA) Public Health Command Districts for food safety and defense. The objective is to standardize the background information, laboratory management, and to provide continuous updates in new and emerging methodologies and technologies and laboratory management principles.
Training includes laboratory roll out, setup and maintenance; personnel certification requirements; familiarization with testing methodologies; review and assessment of laboratory documents; establishing a food testing program and applied targeted testing; evaluation, response, and reporting of laboratory results; and laboratory audits. The majority of the course consists of applied laboratory management wet labs. Dates will be posted when the next course is scheduled.
|Surveillance Food Laboratory Tech||[Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School and Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory (FADL)] This course provides training to veterinary personnel responsible for the operation of the Veterinary Equipment Set (VES) Field Microbiology and VES Food Testing Sets Kits and Outfits (SKO) for the Veterinary Service Table of Equipment (TOE) Procurement and Surveillance Teams and the Table of Distribution and Allowances (TDA) mission at the Public Health Command Districts in support of worldwide Department of Defense Veterinary Service missions in the contemporary operating environment (COE). The objective is to standardize the background information as well as standardization of techniques and procedures; to provide continuous updates and principles in new and emerging methodologies and technologies.
This course is designed to give junior enlisted and designated civilian technicians the technical tasks, knowledge, and skills to conduct rapid and automated tests for indicators of food safety and wholesomeness at surveillance food laboratories in accordance with the US Army Surveillance Food Laboratory Program Guide (SFLPG). Training includes the use and limitations of the assays; equipment use and maintenance; supplies and inventory; results determinations, recording, and interpretations; presumptive positive results; and formal reporting of results. The majority of the course consists of hands-on technical wet labs; culminating in the grading of laboratory worksheets and oral reporting of results. Dates will be posted when a new course is scheduled.|
|Veterinary Readiness Mobilization and Deployment||[Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School and Forces Command (FORSCOM)] To provide a comprehensive view of the mission, structure, and function of a veterinary TOE unit/detachment in a theater of operations.
Areas of instruction include: Veterinary food protection, inspection, sanitation, public health, and preventive medicine in a theater of operations and deployment; food procurement in OCONUS environment; readiness and veterinary TOE equipment issues, and nation assistance programs.|
|Veterinary Support to a Theater of Operations||(Sponsor: AMEDD Center and School) To prepare Veterinary Corps Officers, Veterinary Corps Food Safety Officers, and Veterinary Food Inspection Specialist NCOs to successfully perform their duties in an OCONUS TDA or TOE environment by providing a comprehensive overview of the current mission, structure, and function of the Veterinary Service.
Areas of instruction include advanced training on sanitary audits of potentially hazardous foods, including meat and dairy inspection; food procurement; food defense assessment and mitigation in an environment; commercial food establishment laboratory audits; operational rations inspection and program management; medical and surgical care of animals; nation assistance programs; Food and Water Risk Assessment; and veterinary operations in an OCONUS environment. |
