US Army: Service Members are issued the Military Combat Eye Protection (MCEP) by one of the following ways:
1 - Issued at Individual Entry Training (IET).
2 - Rapid Fielding Initiative (RFI).
3 - Supplied by the Unit or Command via NSN.
4 - Self Purchase - all items stocked at Military Clothing Sales and Post Exchanges. Need to ensure that the items are marked with the green label "Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL) Approved."
US Navy: The Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) cannot dictate policy to the fleet, however, medical personnel are authorized APEL items. Deploying Sailors may get MCEP based on the Area of Operations requirement.
US Air Force: Currently, only Airmen that are deploying are issued the USAF Ballistic Protective Eyewear (BPE). The USAF utilizes the same products as the Army, i.e. The APEL is known as the Air Force Protective List (AFPEL) in the Air Force.
US Marines: All Marines are issued a MCEP from a sole supplier and with those needing a prescription insert, it is made of only polycarbonate material.
*** When required, prescription inserts for MCEP items should only be obtained from the local military Optometry clinic.

In general, when prescription or non-prescription safety glasses are required, these are covered by Federal Law, 29 Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) 1910.132(a) and 29 CFR 1910.133(a)(3).

DODI 1400.32 DOD CIVILIAN WORK FORCE CONTINGENCY AND EMERGENCY PLANNING GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES states:
6.1.3. Civilian employees should be issued, and trained in the use of uniforms, other equipment and the same protective gear as is issued to military personnel in theater, to include lens inserts, if required.
