This online module is provided using Blackboard and is designed to provide knowledge of the basic concepts that an
Industrial Hygienist must be aware of while conducting assistance with, baseline, or periodic surveys in areas with permit required
confined spaces. The module also helps students recognize and record occupational health hazard data in the DOEHRS-IH data
repository, and make appropriate recommendations for this similar exposure group. This module is designed for industrial hygiene,
occupational health and safety professionals.
This online module is provided using Blackboard and gives participants knowledge of the basic concepts and use of the DoD Exposure
Assessment Model for Confined Space Common Processes. The module also helps students recognize and record occupational health
hazard data in the DOEHRS-IH data repository, and make appropriate recommendations for this similar exposure group. This web-based
class will present an opportunity for student to learn important knowledge and skills in statistics are both part of the Defense Occupational
Environmental Health Readiness System used by all Industrial Hygiene staff members.
Upon completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate the ability to recognize and record hazards and controls for the
Confined Space Similar Exposure Group (SEG) in the Defense Occupational and Environmental Readiness System – Industrial Hygiene, and
recommend controls and medical surveillance for SEG members. The knowledge of industrial processes, workplace environments, potential
occupational health hazards, workplace evaluation techniques, industrial hygiene procedures, and occupational health standards are
directly aligned with the Industrial Hygiene competency: "Work Environments and Industrial Processes”.
This module develops attendee’s ability to apply study and observation methods to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control potential
workplace health stressors.
The Technical Learning Objectives of the above IH Competency
1. Demonstrate knowledge of how to use the DoD 8-Step Exposure Assessment Model to evaluate work-place environments
for potential occupational health hazards. Stressors include but are not limited to confined space entry, spray painting, firing
ranges, medical treatment facilities, welding, metal-working, foundries and general indoor environmental issues.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of stressors to include but are not limited to confined space entry, spray painting, firing ranges,
medical treatment facilities, welding, metal-working, foundries and general indoor environmental issues.
This Blackboard Learn self development course supports the industrial hygiene work environments and
industrial processes competency by discussing the basic concepts and use of the DoD Exposure
Assessment Model for confined space processes. The class also demonstrates how to recognize and
record occupational health hazard data in the DOEHRS-IH data repository, and make appropriate
recommendations for this similar exposure group.

Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to:
1 Define IH role and responsibilities in areas with permit-required confined spaces
2 Identify hazards associated with areas with permit-required confined spaces
3 Identify deficiencies with areas in areas with permit-required confined spaces
4 Describe other duties unique to areas with permit-required confined spaces.
