The course details the provisions governing management and transport of Regulated Medical Waste (RMW). The course focuses on the regulatory requirements as prescribed by the Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Defense (DoD), International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, United States Postal Service Domestic Mail Manual, and other regulatory requirements including State management and transport requirements. A certification test is administered at the end of the course. Instructors use written practical exercises to reinforce learning. Workshop participants are encouraged to share their experiences and knowledge with the group. OBJECTIVES: Students learn to identify and classify hazardous materials; prepare and package RMW; prepare and certify RMW manifests based on Federal, State and International requirements; and learn safety/emergency response procedures required when transporting RMW.
Personnel attending Medical Waste Transport Courses should work at or for a healthcare facility and load, unload, handle, package, mark, label, move or prepare regulated medical waste for transport. Prime course participants are military and civilian personnel (e.g. housekeepers, logistics personnel, warehousemen, hazardous material managers, and preventive medicine) who work with, package, or transport regulated medical waste.
