Description

The Intermediate Industrial Hygiene Topics Course provides CP-12 careerists with valuable skills that can be incorporated directly to their job responsibilities. Subject matter experts from the US Army Public Health Command provide instruction on core competency topics. Hands-on exercises and class discussion are used by instructors to enhance student learning.In addition to the technical information, the students are able to network with each other and the instructors. This course provides training and continuing education in technical aspects and core competencies of industrial hygiene. Course topics are designed to support Industrial Hygiene Core Competencies and specific content may vary from year to year depending upon current issues. Because the instructors are Army Civilians and service members, the students have reach back should they encounter questions or concerns.

Applicants must have background knowledge of basic IH sampling math and general chemistry in addition to one of the following qualifiers:

BS in a related field or attendance at the 6H-F11, “Basic Industrial Hygiene Course", presented at the AMEDD Center & School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas

IH Course through AIHA, OSHA or an accredited university
Course spaces are reserved for MEDCOM military, MEDCOM civilian, and Career Program 12 personnel. Other qualified personnel can attend on a space available basis.


This course is a two-part course. There are prerequisites for this course that must be completed prior to applying to this course. Students are administered pre- and post-assessments as a course evaluation tool. Pre & Post Assessments will be administered through Blackboard. Attendees MUST attend all portions of this course and receive a 70% or better passing score for both Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments. 

There is no registration fee charge for this course. You will, however, be responsible for your own TDY expenses, including the payment of your hotel bill when you checkout. Pre and post testing will be done online and participants will need a CAC and an mail.mil email account to register.

Phase 1 is a mandatory series of Online Blackboard Modules that include homework and a assessments for each of the IH core competencies. Assessments for Phase 1 will cover the web-based material. Be advised that all web-based material must be completed and a passing score of 70% must be achieved on all Phase 1 work prior to attending the face-to-face practicum exercises at Edgewood, MD. ALL ONLINE PHASE 1 WORK (40HRS lecture, plus homework & quizzes) MUST BE COMPLETE BEFORE (TBD)  PHASE 2 capstone project assignments will be made by the course director during Phase 1 on (TBD).

Phase 1 has the capability to hold 250 students at one time, however quotas for Phase 2 will be provided to the first qualified candidates until there are no longer seats available. Delaying completion of Phase 1 is strongly discouraged. 
Quotas for Phase 2 will be provided to individuals who:
#1 have completed Phase 1 with a passing score with no more than 5 reattempts for graded material
#2 are approved for travel funding for Phase 2
#3 have supervisor's approval to attend Phase 2


Phase 2 of this course is face-to-face at Edgewood, MD and includes a series of practicums to support sampling and field evaluation techniques. There is a mandatory capstone project that attendees will work on and present in front a panel of experts. Phase 2 will will have one assessment that covers practicum and face-to-face training and will be administered after return to your duty station via Blackboard. Attendees will have 3 working days to complete the Phase 2 final assessment. Please make note that the face to face portion of this course is Monday through Friday, Monday through Thursday will be full class days and Friday will dismiss at approximately 1300. ALL PHASE 2 TDY TRAVEL AND FUNDING MUST BE SECURE AND CONFIRMED WITH COURSE DIRECTOR 45 DAYS BEFORE TRAVEL. 


STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE BOTH PHASES OF THIS COURSE IN THE SAME COURSE ITERATION.  STUDENTS PASSING PHASE 1 AND NOT ATTENDING PHASE 2 IN THE SAME ITERATION WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY COURSE CREDIT, WILL  NOT RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE, AND WILL BE REQUIRED TO REPEAT PHASE 1 IN ORDER TO ATTEND ANY OTHER ITERATIONS OF THIS COURSE.

ABIH provides CM points for this course to those who are eligible. CEUs are issued by Career Program 12 for this course to those who meet all passing requirements. Certificates are issued to students who achieve at least a 70% on the final assessment. Attendance of all online and face to face course sections is required in order to receive a certificate for the course.

Students are responsible for all printed course materials.  PHC provides all course content digitally in Blackboard. Bring materials to take notes (pens, pencils, highlighter, self-stick tabs, etc.) Some of the calculations may involve squaring, deriving the square root, and using logarithms. Calculators are a requirement. Scientific calculators are preferred.

PHASE 2 travel is May 14, 2017 and Friday (late afternoon) May 19  -please do not schedule flights before 3pm. Capstone projects will be presented all day May 19 and class will not be dismissed until after noon.
