This course is designed for laboratorians, clinicians, medical, military, and other personnel including emergency responders who package and ship specimens not in a form capable of causing permanent life threatening or fatal disease in healthy humans and animals known as Biological Substances, Category B. These specimens are routine diagnostic specimens being tested for the presence of a pathogen. This general awareness training will aid researchers and others managing and shipping diagnostic specimens (Biological substances, Category B) to do so per National and International transport requirements.
This training is intended to supplement and not replace required Department of Defense training for personnel who package and ship more pathogenic organisms (Infectious Substances, Category A), toxins, genetically modified microorganisms (GMMO)/genetically modified organisms (GMO), biological select agents and toxins (BSAT), and similar organisms. Personnel who package and ship Infectious substances, Category A; toxins; GMMOs/GMOs; BSAT; regulated medical waste; and similar materials must comply with Defense Transportation Regulation 4500.9-R, Part II, Chapter 204 training standards for shipping and transporting biomedical material.
