The US Air Force is in charge of the DoD dog breeding program at Lackland Air Force Base and produces Belgian Malinois for future careers as MWDs. Program managers are responsible for deciding which dogs to breed and tracking health and performance of resulting offspring in an effort to determine best bloodlines for further breeding.
The DoDMWDVS provides veterinary support to the breeding program including breeding soundness examinations of all potential breeding dogs, reproduction lab services (vaginal cytology, hormone assays, semen collection/evaluation/storage, artificial insemination), ultrasound examinations of pregnant bitches, caesarian section (if needed) as well as general and routine care and maintenance of new puppies to include exams, deworming, and vaccinations.
