People are more likely to get a CA-MRSA infection if they have:
- Close skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a MRSA infection
- Contact with items and surfaces that have MRSA on them (such as contaminated bandages, razors, or towels)
- Uncovered cuts, scrapes, or wounds
- Crowded living conditions
- Poor personal hygiene (not washing hands and body frequently, sharing personal items)
To prevent CA-MRSA infection:
- Keep hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Refer to: - Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed. Wash hands before and after changing a bandage and dispose of all waste in a trash container.
- Avoid touching other people's wounds or bandages.
- Do not share personal items such as razors, towels, and uniforms.
- Disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently by many people, such as gym equipment and door knobs.
