CA-MRSA is spread in the community primarily through contact with infected people or contact with contaminated items and surfaces.

CA-MRSA infections occur in otherwise healthy people who have not been hospitalized within the past year or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis, surgery, or a catheter).

People are more likely to get a CA-MRSA infection if they have:

  • Close skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a MRSA infection
  • Contact with items and surfaces that have MRSA on them (such as contaminated bandages, razors, or towels)
  • Uncovered cuts, scrapes, or wounds
  • Crowded living conditions
  • Poor personal hygiene (not washing hands and body frequently, sharing personal items)

To prevent CA-MRSA infection:

  • Keep hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    Refer to:
  • Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed. Wash hands before and after changing a bandage and dispose of all waste in a trash container.
  • Avoid touching other people's wounds or bandages.
  • Do not share personal items such as razors, towels, and uniforms.
  • Disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently by many people, such as gym equipment and door knobs.
